Comprehensive Care at KBIC Health

Welcome to the Donald A. LaPointe Health & Education Center

The Keweenaw Bay Indian Community (KBIC) serves its members through the Donald A. LaPointe Health & Education Center located in Baraga, Michigan. Established to provide holistic and culturally relevant health services, this facility is a cornerstone for approximately 2,800 tribal members and their descendants across Baraga, Houghton, and Ontonagon Counties. Our health center proudly offers a wide array of services, including medical, dental, behavioral health, and pharmacy services.

A Unique Healthcare Facility

Built in 1997 and recently expanded to include an additional 5,584 square feet, the center boasts a total of 218,830 square feet. This expansion allows for better clinic rooms and offices equipped to serve the community more effectively. The KBIC Medical Clinic stands out as the first Tribal Health Department in Michigan designated as a Patient-Centered Medical Home by Blue Cross Blue Shield on August 6, 2012. This designation highlights our commitment to delivering high-quality care coordinated around the needs of our patients.

Variety of Services Offered

KBIC Health provides comprehensive health services that cater to diverse needs. Our medical services encompass routine examinations, chronic disease management, and preventive care aimed at improving community health outcomes. For those dealing with diabetes, our specialized diabetes care program focuses on education, monitoring, and innovative treatment approaches designed to help manage the condition effectively.

Dental services play an essential role in our healthcare offerings as well. We provide preventive care and treatment options that focus on long-term oral health, ensuring that our community members have access to necessary resources for maintaining healthy smiles.

Furthermore, we recognize the significance of behavioral health in overall well-being. Our team addresses mental health concerns through counseling and community programs aimed at promoting mental wellness among our tribal members.

Community Engagement and Education

The KBIC Health initiative is not limited to healthcare provision; it also extends to community engagement through educational programs. In 2021, the Inter-Tribal Council of Michigan launched Anishinaabek Cooking Resources (ACR), distributing meal plans and recipes aimed at improving nutritional awareness within tribal communities. This initiative reflects our commitment to fostering healthier lifestyles through culturally relevant dietary options.

Families are encouraged to use available resources such as transportation services for easier access to healthcare appointments. We emphasize regular check-ups and continuous communication between healthcare providers and patients to ensure everyone remains informed about their health choices.

Additionally, we host workshops focused on preventive healthcare strategies such as smoking cessation programs and exercise classes that promote physical activity among all age groups. These initiatives not only educate but also empower individuals to take charge of their health journeys.

Looking Ahead

The KBIC Health facility continues striving for excellence in serving our tribal members by enhancing existing services and expanding new ones tailored to meet evolving community needs. With ongoing development plans that prioritize patient-centered care and access to comprehensive healthcare resources, we aim to set new standards for tribal health initiatives across Michigan.

“Improving the quality of life within our community is at the heart of what we do,” says one staff member at KBIC Health. As we look forward to future advancements in healthcare delivery, we remain committed to fostering an environment where wellness is attainable for all.

Innovative Partnerships and Future Goals

An integral part of enhancing healthcare services comes from establishing partnerships with local organizations and institutions. Collaborations with universities allow us access to the latest research on indigenous health issues which inform our practices and policies. These partnerships also enable us to bring specialists into our community who can provide unique insights into specific areas of concern such as substance abuse treatment or maternal child health initiatives.

Moreover, technology plays a pivotal role in advancing care delivery at KBIC Health. We are exploring telehealth options that will enable patients in remote areas to connect with providers without needing to travel long distances—removing barriers that often prevent individuals from seeking necessary care.

This forward-thinking approach ensures not only that we address immediate healthcare needs but also take proactive measures towards a healthier future for generations to come. Community feedback is crucial; thus we regularly conduct surveys and focus groups allowing us to adapt services based on what members truly desire from their health center.
